Occupy our Emotions

One of the six constant mitzvahs is do not stray after the thoughts of your heart and eyes.

It is a mitzvah to protect our souls from damage and it refers to the 248 negative precepts of the Torah.

These mitzvahs, the mitzvahs to NOT do, might seem to us like restrictions that curtail the longings that we are drawn to.  In fact that is exactly what they are.  The main concept that we must instill within ourselves is that our being drawn to them does not mean that they are good for us.

Not only are we drawn to them, but we crave them.  We want to take the pleasures.  We feel entitled to them.  We feel deprived if we can’t do exactly as our hearts choose.  We cry. We throw temper tantrums.  We organize protests and try to change societies so that we can have the  things that we are drawn to.  But there is a funny twist to all of this.

If we get everything that we are drawn to, we are still not happy.  It does not fill up the part of us that is truly seeking joy and pleasure.  How can that be?  It makes no sense.

The Designer of the universe, Hashem Yisborach, created us this way for a purpose.  It was not to torture us.  He gave us an instruction book, the Torah, and He stipulates the 248 negative precepts to avoid so that we do not stray after the thoughts of the heart and eyes.

How can we accept that we are placed here in a world where what is natural if actualized will ultimately take us to bankruptcy in the account of joy?  We have intellectual and emotional objection to that.  Until we realize one key thing.

Hidden within us is an ability to experience a joy and pleasure for which we were created that can ONLY be experienced here under these conditions.  HERE, not in the next world, are we capable of experiencing spiritual pleasure in relating to the Creator of the world.  And in the next world too, but we can experience it here and continue it in a much more experiential way after 120 years.

What is this pleasure?

It is the pleasure of communing with Perfection, with Hashem Yisborach, through our own choice.  By comprehending that within us is a Divine soul that, when we let go of gripping what is natural and physical and visible for the sake of recognizing the 248 negative precepts as the path to joy that they are and for the sake of recognizing that at all times our consciousness is continually attached to Hashem even though we are in this lower world in bodies, that mesiras nefesh, that intellectual choice to step back our grip on physicality, helps us toward becoming holy.

We are in the corridor to a palace. We are on the shore before an ocean of calmness and beauty but we are staying on the shore.  Why?  Come in!  The water is fine!

What is holding us back is emotional investment in things of this world alone, a lack of emunah.  When we realize we can rule our hearts, we can begin to see how our emotional investments may be hurting us AND with strength and commitment to investing our emotions more productively, we can choose to direct our hearts to apply that same, powerful bonding emotion to love and fear of Hashem instead.

We are here to love and fear and commune with Hashem.  That is what serving Hashem is, and we do this through the mitzvohs. That is the ocean of calmness and joy and beauty available to us HERE,  NOW, in this lifetime.  And it is the greatest pleasure that anyone can experience, a pleasure truly from another world that is beyond the five senses.  It is why we are created.  And we have the mechanisms within us to get there.

Emotion, free will, siyata deshmaya and Torah precepts.

Emotion is complicated.  There are our emotional reactions, which belong more to the stimulating event than to our intellect, and are therefore not truly our essence in any way.  In fact, they are the smoke screen, the adversity, the opportunity, that Hashem gives us to apply free will to serve Him.  Yet there is emotion that is connected to intellect, and intellect affects that emotion.  How can we change these fundamental, basic feelings?  By recognizing where our emotional investments are not bringing us in harmony with Hashem’s will, we ask Hashem for the will power to direct these emotions to love and fear Hashem.  If we are truly sincere, this teshuva, this return, this retraction and reclaiming of misapplied emotional energy becomes the electric power source of passionate attachment when we re-invest it in loving and fearing Hashem, bringing an intangible pleasure into our realm of physical pleasure.

All because we choose to understand the Torah precept of don’t stray after the thoughts of our hearts and eyes.as the doorway to an ocean of spiritual peace and pleasure.

Why the negative precepts and not the 365 positive ones?  We CAN do it with the positive precepts with intention to love and fear Hashem.  But being human, the urgency of it may often escape us and we may not remember.  It is through the suffering of poorly invested emotional energy that we obtain motivation to reach upwards.

Halavai, if we could attach our emotions through the positive precepts and with that proper investment of emotional love create a bond with Hashem such that we would never want to be out of rapport with Hashem, then we would avoid a great deal of suffering.  Somehow, between both set of precepts, the positive and negative mitzvahs, we have the complete tools to succeed in serving Hashem as we were intended to, to experience spiritual pleasure and joy in knowing Him.

Lech Lecha – come out of the corridor and into the palace – come off the shore – and come to a new land that Hashem is waiting to show us.

Olam Haba is not that world over there!  It is this world come to a new place.  WE can make that new place

Come out of the corridor and into the palace, come off the shore and into the water.  All it will cost you is your emotional investments in what is deeply troubling you and emunah to connect it to love and fear of Hashem.

“I recognize that I am emotionally attached to this pattern/thought/experience and I see that it is unpleasant.  Hashem I need Your help to shift my emotions.  Please give me the will power, to the very depths of this emotion, help me to match the emotion with will power to calm my subconscious clinging to this self-destructive connection.  I am awaiting the will power, I sincerely want to no longer be emotionally attached to this thought/experience/memory.  [once the emotion is calm and the feeling of will power there, say:]  Hashem I choose that the emotional attachment be directed to love and fear of Hashem alone, please lead me in the path that I wish to go, for the unification and sanctification of Your name, for now I realize that this has been sent for me to bring my consciousness back into harmony with Your Will.  That is my sincere choice and desire.”  What happens next is that our highest will becomes purified and this changes every aspect of our thoughts and experiences, we become reconstituted and recreated.

These are spiritual realities of this world.  If you have never experienced it, then it is time.  Hashem is standing in front of us, waiting for us to make a movement toward Him – and when  we choose to, may our choice to love and fear Hashem and bring our consciousness in harmony with His Will re-unite us in His eyes as we were under the chuppa of Sinai once again, that the Shechina has a people to attach to so that He may fulfill His Promise to redeem Klal Yisrael and send the Moshiach to redeem us.
