Disagreement between Dr.Sigmund Freud and Dr. Victor Frankl - a testament to free will and purposefulness of life

Rabbi Moshe Goldberger, in the shiur below, re-tells the disagreement between Dr. Sigmund Freud and Dr. Victor Frankl, and how Dr. Frankl's book Man's Search for Meaning came to be published.

The disagreement between them was that Dr. Frankl asserted that from his observations in the Holocaust, that a person is not a machine, as Dr. Freud's theories were based, but rather that there is a free will to a person and meaning in suffering, both of which go beyond the structure that Dr. Freud set forth in the ego, id, superego construction of the human mind.

Although Dr. Frankl was not an Observant Jew, his observations are consistent with the purpose of creation (chapter 2 of Derech Hashem by the Ramchal) and with emunah in general.

May Dr. Frankl's observations give us chizuk to bring our challenges into focus and realize we are here to repair our characteristics by expending energy at our free will point to bring out the aspect of the Divine Image within us.

Given the events of last week's brutal murder, my interest in Dr. Frankl's impact on psychology became renewed when I heard this Shiur by Rabbi Moshe Goldberger of the Yeshiva of Staten Island- I believe it is incumbent upon us to see that not only can we grow more like Hashem but that the neglect of this area can lead to disaster.

Leiby Kletzky's murderer, on Tuesday, when he went to work, davened for the safe return of Leiby!  Not only that, he did it with such convincing concern as to correct the pronunciation of Leiby's name during the tehillim.  I think this is what struck me the most - that there could be such a huge discrepancy between our outer observance and what is going on inside of us!  Is the message for us not spelled out quite clearly, that we must bring our observance inward, to not go unbounded in natural tendencies but rather apply love and fear of Hashem  to our internal battefield?  Is it not a fair message that Hashem wants to bring the geulah but that we have to work on ourselves?  - that is always the message, no?   I believe I am within legitimate space to see this as a genuine message from Hashem within the terrible event.

May Hashem give us the strength to use our free will to choose to become better people,  reaching for the Divine Promise - "He who comes to be purified will be helped."
