Can we live holy lives?

What feels sweet to us?  Delicious food, a pleasant nap, enjoyable climate and many more comforts would make the list.  Do we have even the beginning of clarity that what would be sweetest of all would be the visceral sensation of joy that accompanies any mitzvah we do, a flow of pleasantness that comes as a direct result of our connecting with Hashem?  And if we have an inkling of this, why do we at times continue to prefer choices of the first kind, preferring that lovely nap?  Are we not intelligent beings? What are we holding onto?

What Hashem expects of us is devotion to the relationship, to serving Him.  Yet He also sends us a yetzer hara to test us, and the yetzer hara’s arguments are quite logical and appealing.  How do we feel after we make the wrong choice?  Do we store our regret in our mind so as to teach us?  Are we choosing to rebel against our service and defy Hashem for the sake of our own comfort and counsel?  Are any of us innocent of this?

As long as we have bodies, we have this struggle.  And as we develop clarity regarding the Goodness that surrounds us, hopefully we will find the strength to choose the path, the only path, that truly can bring us every comfort and good thing in the world.

If we do not have clarity, it is not too late. It is never too late to seek it out.  Instead of telling Hashem how great our problems are, let’s begin by telling our problems how great is Hashem, Who has infinite solutions for everything.  In so doing, we can build a loving and grateful relationship with Him Who controls our heartbeat!

May Hashem have mercy upon us for the times we fall into the darkness and help us to lift ourselves above our nature and may Hashem redeem us speedily.
